Spartanburg, SC – May 22, 2014 – It was a different home venue, but the result was the same for the Upward Stars Wednesday night in their second NPSL Game: a 1-0 victory.

Hosting FC Discoveries at USC Upstate, the Stars got a goal from Bob Jones University alumnus Jon Grant and held off a late push by the visitors to improve to 2-0 in their inaugural season.

“It was another great result for us,” Stars head coach and general manager Paul Henson said. “We started slowly and after getting a goal ahead we should’ve sealed the game with some clear-cut chances, including a penalty. The Discoveries team battled back admirably, and we were pleased to come away with the three points.”

Stars goalkeeper Ruben Rodriguez was credited with the clean sheet in his first start of the season.

The Stars will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina Friday night to face Gate City FC for their first road match. They’ll look to continue the positive momentum generated after their second consecutive shutout win.

“This result places us at the top of the league,” Henson said. “We are extremely proud of that and we will continue to work together to maintain that position.”
